Welcome to Tools for Self Reliance
We believe in a world free from extreme poverty and hunger, and that helping people to be more self-reliant is the best way to achieve this. Nowhere is this truer than in Africa.
For us the key is in our name, and we think Tools for Self Reliance hits the nail on the head. We give people a chance they never had – the skills and tools to get them out of poverty and into work.
Each year we ship tens of thousands of high-quality refurbished tools and sewing machines to projects in Tanzania, Uganda, Ghana, Zambia, Sierra Leone and Malawi. The tools make a big difference, but they are only part of the story. We also help hundreds of hard-working men and women get the skills they need to succeed.
We work with partner organisations in Africa because they are best placed to know the needs of the local communities.
Our volunteers across the UK collect, refurbish and pack the tools. They help in lots of other ways too.

What’s involved?
Abass couldn’t afford to go to school in his home town in Ghana because he couldn’t pay the fees. Abass was lucky. He got the chance to learn how to repair bicycles. Just £60 will pay for three day’s training and a bicycle repair kit.
The bicycle repair project struck us as an excellent example of cost effective income generation …
