Zimbabwe
Zimbabwe, once the bread basket of Africa, currently faces severe food shortages, a crumbling economy and political turmoil. Many Zimbabweans are having to put all their resources into survival.
Previously we have supported tool making programmes and local networking of artisans but lack of fuel, causing logistical problems, and a disintegrating civil service has hampered our attempts to continue working here.
In the past we have worked with Water Workshops, Mwenezi Development Training Centre, and JD Kanyongo Self Help groups.
We have also worked with the German Development Service (DED) to develop a project with OCCZIM, a Zimbabwean non-governmental organisation. The Organisation of Collective Co-operatives in Zimbabwe (OCCZIM) in partnership with DED, is active in the promotion of informal sector associations (ISAs) in Masvingo province. ISAs work at grassroots level to offer tradespeople access to training, credit and tools. This process also provides a valuable vehicle for HIV/AIDS awareness and prevention.
