TRAX Ghana
TRAX Ghana
TRAX Ghana was founded in 1989. It started off in Accra with literacy programmes and eventually spread to Bunkpurugu, East Mamprusi District in the Northern Region.
The organisation has transformed over the course of the years and has implemented many different initiatives from the Appropriate Technology and Adult Literacy Programme, Water Management Initiatives, Soil and Water Conservation, to the current Sustainable Livelihoods Programme.
TRAX Ghana promotes community led Sustainable Agriculture in areas threatened by erosion and desertification. The programme responds to community needs rather than imposing ideas from the outside. The policy is demand driven and encourages participation of the poor at every stage of the development process.
The programme places particular emphasis on the role of women and focuses on the following areas:
Sustainable Livelihood (Agriculture & Income Generation Activities)
Training of Trainers – dissemination of sustainable Livelihood experiences
Community Empowerment (Awareness creation, bridging the IT gap between the North and South).
Institutional Capacity Building (Building the institutional capacity to render it independent).
The Ghana organisational structure is made up of a Local Board of Patrons and Directors, and a Management Team with a total of 29 staff members (including administrative support staff). The country programme is headed by an Operations Manager and assisted by a Sustainable Livelihood Project Coordinator.
Tools for Self Reliance has been working in partnership with TRAX for over three years on various projects for sustainable development.
