Motor mechanics engineer their way to a better future!

Story from Africa

The Mabaale Metalwork and Mechanics group started up with ten members and an auto-mechanics kit from Tools for Self Reliance in 2001.

Three of the founding members have now moved on to open new businesses in the bigger towns where there is a power supply and better quality services. The remainder of the group have bought a generator to enable it to meet the needs of their customers. Members have used income from the group to build either permanent residential houses or commercial properties in local trading centres. Mabaale Metalwork and Mechanics offers job opportunities for a person at 5000 Ugandan shillings a day and group members have an average of one employee each to work on their farms. Business capital has grown by 500%.

The Twimuke Group is a similar enterprise with nine members: seven men and two women. After buying a plot and opening up a motor mechanics garage, group members can make enough money to pay school fees for their children. Kwebiha John, one of the members, was able to buy two cows and a bicycle. Since beginning the venture, the group’s capital has tripled and of the nine members, six have become fully skilled.
