Tweimukye Women

Maria Goretti’s sister, on her deathbed had asked her to take care of her three children. “My sister is dying, and then she asks me, will you take my children. How can I deny her?” she said.

Tweimukye Women run their enterprise from a small shop in Kagadi. Tweimukye means “Lets please raise up.” Tweimukye Womens Group had five members, although there were only two full time members who manned the shop. All of the women had children to raise although as Namalembeke Maria Goretti, the group initiator explained, these children were not necessarily their own.

Initially the ladies practicised sewing with hand needles on old cut up newspapers as their finances did not allow them to practise on cloth. After having learnt some skills, they then moved over to training on the one sewing machine which the group had which was Maria Goretti’s personal machine.

The group aplied for and received some sewing machines from Tools for Self Reliance which has allowed them to improve their living standrds and care for their children.
